There's a social media trend going around where women ask the men in their lives how often they think about the Roman Empire. The women are then duly surprised when the man says some variation of "Pretty much every day."

Thanks for this post. Every time I think about Christ crucified, I think about the Romans. When I think of His nativity in Bethlehem, I think about the census ordered by Emperor Augustus. When I think about the Vatican in Rome, I am reminded about the city's ancient origins. And so on, you get the idea....

Yup. I get the idea. I also tend to think more about the Christian Roman Empire (post Constantine) than the pagan Roman Empire. So there's that. :-)
ReplyDeleteWhen one considers the parallels between the Roman experience from founding and virtues to its eventual end and the history of the United States, the study would seem of prescient value to the viewing of present events. Remarks by historians on learning from the past and on how history can repeat are also worthy of consideration.
